What does “phygital” mean for review management?
Phygital means a tangible touchpoint (business or table card) connects to a digital process. At SmarterStars that is two equal QR channels — Google review or private feedback — with no star filter and no tech skills required from your team.
The definition
“Phygital” is a portmanteau of physical and digital. It describes concepts where a tangible object and a digital process interlock rather than sit side by side. The smartphone is the lens on the physical world. A glance at a QR code is enough. The user is in the digital channel — without searching, without typing, without an app download.
In review management, that means concretely: after a good experience, the customer receives a high-quality card. On it are two equally sized, neutrally labeled QR codes. One leads to the official Google profile. One leads to a private feedback form. The customer freely chooses which path to take.
Why take the detour through the physical world?
Because the digital channel is overcrowded. Review reminders by email or SMS compete with hundreds of other messages. They are unconsciously classified as fleeting. Physical media, by contrast, are processed measurably differently. In the neuroscience study by Canada Post and TrueImpact (2015, EEG and eye tracking), direct mail was 21% easier to process than digital advertising. It was 20% more motivating. Brand recall was 70% higher. Research by Temple University with the USPS Office of Inspector General shows stronger emotional responses and a higher subjectively perceived value.
There is also a psychological effect. Merely touching an object can trigger an unconscious sense of ownership and value (psychological ownership, Peck & Shu 2009). A good card in hand feels like appreciation. A mass SMS does not.
What is “digital” about it
The impulse starts offline. Impact shows up online. The Google QR uses the official direct link — without a counter or intermediate page. Only the private channel is measurable. In StarDesk you see after each monitoring run how average rating and count are developing. You learn which cards work. The Safety Score™ tells you how many cards fit your profile in the following month so growth stays organic.
Important: StarDesk shows monitoring values. There is no link to your Google account. There is no live access to your Google Business Profile.
Why this matters
83% of consumers read reviews on Google. Only 4% never read online reviews (BrightLocal 2025). Your Google profile is therefore the first real impression of your business for most prospects. That holds long before anyone calls or opens the door. The phygital approach ensures that impression matches reality. The satisfied majority has a voice instead of going home silently.
Boundary: no review gating
Phygital does not mean filtering voices. Both QR codes sit side by side, equally sized and neutrally labeled. There is no pre-selection by mood. There are no suppressed reviews. An unhappy customer can choose the public path at any time. This equality distinguishes the approach from tools that only let positive voices through. It is designed for alignment with Google’s guidelines, the FTC Reviews Rule, and EU Directive 2019/2161. This is not legal advice.
